A dated starting point, not a forever claim

Enjoy the Pause scored 76% in its first Responsible, Environmental and Sustainable Tourism (REST) assessment in 2020. That is useful history, but it is not presented as proof that every product, tariff or accreditation remains unchanged in 2026.

The better test is the current practice inside the house. Paula continues to review what can be reduced, refilled, reused or chosen more carefully, and will confirm dated evidence when a certification matters to a guest.

Two commitments signed in July 2026

Enjoy the Pause has made the SME Climate Commitment through the SME Climate Hub, which means committing to halve the business's greenhouse gas emissions within ten years, reach net zero before 2050, and disclose progress every year. The commitment is recognised by the UN Climate Change Global Climate Action portal and aligns the business with the Race to Zero campaign.

Enjoy the Pause is also a signatory of the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism, which carries the same halve-by-2030 and net-zero-before-2050 goals for the tourism sector, and requires each signatory to deliver a climate action plan within twelve months of signing and to report publicly on progress each year.

Both are promises about what happens next rather than proof of what has already been achieved, and this page will carry the plan and the annual figures once they exist. A signed commitment with nothing published behind it would be worth very little.

Refillable products with fewer harsh ingredients

The guest toiletries and household cleaning range uses products selected for plant-based ingredients and refillable containers. Shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, hand soap, kitchen cleaning products and laundry supplies are provided for the stay.

Product ranges can change, so ask Paula before booking if an ingredient, fragrance, allergy or vegan requirement is important.

Less single-use waste

Refilling full-size containers avoids relying on a new set of miniature bottles for every arrival. The house also has clear recycling arrangements and Paula favours reusable, durable or upcycled items where they work well for guests.

Sustainability does not mean asking guests to accept worn-out essentials. Comfort, cleanliness and safety remain part of the decision.

Use energy for the stay you are having

Heating controls, lighting and appliances have been chosen or managed with efficiency in mind. Clear house instructions help guests stay comfortable without heating empty rooms or leaving equipment running unnecessarily.

Paula does not ask guests to compromise their comfort. The practical request is simply to use heating, lighting, laundry and water for the people who are actually staying.

A city break that can begin on foot

Enjoy the Pause is inside Chester's city walls. Many central sights, restaurants and shops can be reached on foot, while Chester railway station is around a 15-minute walk for guests whose luggage and mobility make that practical.

Walking or public transport will not suit every journey or every guest. The aim is to make lower-car choices possible, not to pretend every trip can be car-free.

Support the city you came to enjoy

Paula's local recommendations help guests find independent places to eat, drink and spend time in Chester. Keeping more of the stay within the local economy is one practical part of responsible tourism.

The guides prioritise current, useful recommendations rather than paid placements. Venues change, so opening details are checked and dated where they are likely to move.

A claim should be specific enough to check

Terms such as eco-friendly or sustainable can hide more than they explain. This page names the choices Paula can evidence and dates the historical assessment rather than using a broad green label as decoration.

If a current certification, supplier, product or environmental policy affects your decision, ask. Paula will confirm the detail she can support and say plainly when something has changed.
